One shot dead in Western Togoland secessionists attacks

One person has been confirmed dead in attacks by the Western Togoland secessionists on Friday, September 25, 2020.

The deceased was a member of the Homeland Study Group Foundation (HSGF) who engaged in an exchange of gunfire with the joint security team which had been deployed to restore calm in the region.

The secessionists, who had earlier conducted a simultaneous attack on the Aveyime and Mepe Police Stations in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region, say they want the Region to be an autonomous country known as Western Togoland.

The police and military command have released a joint statement detailing what ensured in the lead-up to the killing during which 31 others were arrested.

“Fire exchanges between the Group and the Security Agencies led to the death of one (1) member of the HSGF and injury to three (3) others,” the September 25 press release revealed.

According to the statement, a police commander for Aveyime who was also injured has been evacuated to the Police Hospital while the other wounded HSGF members have also been evacuated to the Ho Teaching Hospital.

The security team also indicated that the Homeland Study Group Foundation (HSGF) had hatched an elaborate plan to destroy some key installation in the region, including the Ho Central Market. But the plan was unsuccessful due to the efforts of the security operation Thursday.

“It is hereby stated that an earlier pre-emptive operation on Thursday 24 September 2020, foiled a plan by the Group to burn the Ho Central Market and other key installations.”

The secessionists had earlier mounted roadblocks on all roads leading to and from the Volta Region leading to about 3 km of traffic.

The two security agencies, “all the roadblocks have also been cleared and the security agencies have taken control of the highways and strategic installations within the Region.”
